Foo Fighters Booked For German Rock Festival That Canceled Pantera Set

Foo Fighters will replace Pantera at Germany's Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park festivals this spring after Pantera was dropped from the bill over a 2016 racially insensitive incident involving frontman Phil Anselmo.

At the end of a 2016 tribute concert for late-Pantera guitarist 'Dimebag' Darrell Abbott, Anselmo allegedly gave a Nazi salute and called out "white power." He later claimed the act was an inside joke about white wine that he foolishly played out onstage.

"...[I]t was ugly," Anselmo said in an apology that came a few hours after the clip began circulating online. "It was uncalled for. And anyone who knows me and my true nature knows that I don't believe in any of that; I don't want to be part of any [hate] group. I'm an individual, and I am a thousand percent apologetic to anyone that took offense to what I said because you should have taken offense to what I said. And I am so sorry, and I hope you just ... man, give me another chance ... I love all of you."

Anselmo has been accused of making racially-insensitive remarks in the past, going all the way back to a 1995 incident in Montreal, Quebec.

On Monday, Rock Am Ring and Rock Im Park organizers in Germany conceded that Pantera's booking had prompted "many intensive conversations" with artists, partners and fans. They ultimately decided that Anselmo's apology was not enough and they removed the band from the festival.

Foo Fighters on the other hand announced last month that they would continue this year as "a different band," following the tragic death of drummer Taylor Hawkins last March.

The Foos have committed to several 2023 festivals in the U.S. and abroad, the first one being Boston Calling in May. The band has yet to announce who will follow Hawkins as their drummer.

The band will headline Rock Am Ring on Friday, June 2, and Rock Im Park on Sunday, June 4. Go here for the tour dates.
