Here's what's trending for April 30.

An iconic, but decaying landmark is coming down this morning in Northampton County. Beginning at 9am, the 50,000 gallon Dixie Cup will be removed from the rooftop of the vacant Dixie Cup factory on South 24th Street in Wilson. That cup has stood there since 1921, but the factory closed more than 40 years ago and has become an eyesore. Developers have purchased the property and have big plans for it. A project, to be named "1921 Dixie Avenue" will include 412 apartments, a movie theater, indoor golf and pickleball. The Dixie Cup isn't disappearing however. A community gathering area displaying the Dixie Cup as a centerpiece exhibit is also part of the plans.

The Allentown City Council is approving a pause on homeless encampment removals. The Council voted unanimously last night in favor of halting evictions at encampments until a policy addressing the city's response to the homeless population is in place. The city faced criticism earlier this month for an attempt to remove residents from a homeless encampment at Fountain Park, originally giving them only ten days to vacate. The work on the policy is ongoing.

More service cuts are coming at LANTA. Executive director Owen O'Neil says the potential cuts represent a 7 percent reduction in service, with several bus lines cutting their first or last trips of the day, along with some modified weekend hours. He says they are part of a long range plan. "Service reductions are part of a two-year plan that we are rolling out to set ourselves up better financially in the long-term when we look at where we think our funding levels are going to be," O'Neil says. Back in January, LANTA will cut 5 percent of its service by cancelling some trips on 13 bus lines.

The last location of J's Steaks & Subs in Northampton is closing one month from today. The business' Facebook page says the restaurant on Main Street is closing May 30. At its peak, J's had dozens of locations across the region, including in Catasauqua, Coopersburg, Hellertown and Telford.

Police in Palmer Township are investigating after a false report of an active shooter earlier this week. Police were sent to a business in the 4000 block of Freemansburg Avenue Tuesday afternoon just before 5:30 for an active shooter report. Responding officers spoke with a man on scene who was securing the property for the evening and they quickly found no evidence of an active shooter or criminal activity. Police said there is no threat to the community and the investigation is ongoing.

Part of I-78 in Lehigh County is completely open again after a crash involving two 18-wheelers Wednesday night. The collision happened in the eastbound lanes in Upper Saucon Township near the Summit Lawn exit at around 6 p.m. There was reportedly heavy traffic on the highway for about two hours while crews worked to clear the scene. Authorities say nobody was injured.

PennDOT reports the fewest number of motorists died in traffic crashes in 2025 since record keeping began in 1928. The 1,047 collision deaths in 979 different crashes last year are 80 below the fatalities on Pennsylvania roads the year before. In 2025, there were 109,515 total reportable crashes, the second lowest on record only to 2020, when traffic volumes were down statewide due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Flyers are into round two of the playoffs after a thrilling 1-0 overtime win over Pittsburgh Wednesday night. Head coach Rick Tocchet says the win is huge both in the present and in the future. "To play 19, 20, 21-year-olds in this kind of pace. Playing against Sidney Crosby, in this atmosphere, overtime, tense, when things are going our way, how they're learning. This is huge development for these young guys these young guys to taste it. I'm really proud of the young guys for hanging in there for us," Tocchet said. Cam York scored the overtime winner for the Flyers, who will play Carolina in round two.
