Monday's torrential rain caused all kinds of flooding issues on Lehigh Valley roads. Flash flooding was reported in the area of Route 309 and Hopewell Road in Upper Saucon Township, near Saucon Creek. A water rescue was reported there. More flooding was reported on roads in Upper Saucon Township. In Center Valley, Route 309 was closed at Route 378. In Upper Milford Township, flooding was reported at Dillingersville and Church View roads. In Monroe County, numerous roads were flooded out in the Stroudsburg and East Stroudsburg areas.
More than one year after a murder in Allentown, the man who allegedly pulled the trigger is under arrest. Lehigh County DA Gavin Holihan says the case serves as a reminder that just because a killer isn't arrested right away doesn't mean they won't be. "Even when the people who committed the crimes aren't paying attention anymore, sometimes they get careless, they get sloppy and our investigators are there to pick those clues up," Holihan says. 24-year-old Wilmer Marte-Tavarez of Pike County is now in custody and charged with the June 1st 2024 killing of 25-year-old Angel Martinez-Velez on the basketball court in Allentown's Fountain Park. Two other men, one from Allentown and another from Bethlehem, were previously arrested for their alleged roles in the killing.
The site that used to house Martin Tower in Bethlehem is now home to two new Lehigh Valley Health Network facilities, including The Women's Health Center at Tower Place. LVHN Dr. Amanda Flicker says she's extremely proud of it. "This building exemplifies everything that women need in their healthcare," Flicker says. LVHN says it's the region's first women's health center. Health Center at Tower Place is the second building that will open to patients today.
The Lehigh County Coroner has identified the man killed in a Friday crash at the intersection of Route 100 and West Tilghman Street in Upper Macungie Township. 82-year-old Dennis Smith, of Weisenberg Township. died Friday afternoon after being involved in an accident with two other vehicles. Police are still investigating the circumstances of the crash.
Changes are being made to the state's provisional ballot envelopes. It now gives voters instructions on which fields they need to fill out. It also highlights where the voter needs to add a signature. The Department of State used feedback from multiple counties before rolling out the redesign. The new envelopes are expected to be used during the 2025 general election.
Governor Phil Murphy has declared a state of emergency across New Jersey after heavy rains dumped several inches on many parts of the state. The rains caused road closures, power outages and damage around the state, especially in central New Jersey. Serious flooding was reported on the Jersey Shore, particularly in Plainfield and Garwood in Union County. Berkeley Heights Township issued a shelter-in-place order because of flooding there. Flash flood warnings have been issued throughout the state. Ground stops were issued at Newark, JFK International and LaGuardia Airports last night. New Jersey Transit says the rain is expected to affect train and light rail service.
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms have a new head coach. After two seasons as a Phantoms' assistant coach, John Snowden has been promoted to become the Phantoms' fifth coach since coming to Allentown in 1996. The 43-year-old Snowden replaces Ian Laperrière, who in May was named as an advisor for hockey operations with the Flyers. Laperrière served as the Phantoms’ head coach for four seasons.
The Washington Nationals have selected Emmaus High graduate Wyatt Henseler in the ninth round of the Major League Baseball draft. Henseler spent his college career at the University of Pennsylvania before he transferred to Texas A-and-M for his graduate season. Henseler was named Ivy League Player of the Year last year in his senior season at Penn. He split time between second and third base at Texas A-and-M.
A star player on the 76ers is recovering from surgery. The team announced on Monday that Paul George underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. He got hurt during a recent workout and will be reevaluated before training camp. The 35-year-old was limited to 41 games last season after dealing with several injuries. George averaged just over 16 points per game.
