Accu-Weather's Joe Lundberg says today will be a pretty typical Lehigh Valley summer day. "It's going to get hot and humid today. I think we're going to get to 90 without too much trouble today. The Accu-Weather RealFeel temperatures are going knock on the door to the century mark. It's just that brutal of an air mass," Lundberg says. And with all that heat and humidity, Lundberg says some strong thunderstorms are likely today. Any storm could bring damaging winds and cause flash flooding.
The Lehigh County Coroner's Office has released the name of the man killed early Sunday morning during an apparent road rage incident in Allentown. 35-year-old Tamir Johnson was shot to death in the area of 5th and Hamilton streets around 3:30 Sunday morning. Investigators say Johnson was driving and forced the driver of another vehicle to the curb. It was then that Johnson could be seen on surveillance video swinging a baseball bat at the other driver and hitting that driver's side door. That driver, who has not been named, then pulled out a gun and killed Johnson. The DA's office says that man was is legal possession of the handgun and at this point no charges are been filed against him.
The Lehigh County Coroner's Office has released the name of the man killed by a hit-and-run driver last Friday morning. 76-year-old Thomas Hess, of Upper Macungie Township, was riding an electric bicycle when he was struck in the area of Schantz and Cetronia roads in the township.
Monday was a busy day for firefighters in Slatington. Just after 10am, firefighters were called to the 600 block of Main Street for reports of a garage fire. That fire quickly spread to three other garages. Ten people were displaced from nearby buildings, however no injuries are reported.
It wasn't the Hamburgler but rather four people caught on video stealing a Ronald McDonald statue from a McDonald's in Nesquehoning Sunday afternoon. "When I checked the footage, you could see them in here horsing around a bit. It was busy, so they just creeped out the two side doors," says Eve Snyder, that McDonald's general manager. She says video then shows the four putting the statue into a black SUV and driving off.
The murder trial for a Bucks County man accused of killing and then beheading his father began Monday. Justin Mohn is accused of shooting his father to death and then filming himself holding his father's severed head in a plastic bag, then posting that video to YouTube. In court Monday, we learned it was Justin's mother, Denice Mohn, who first discovered the body of her husband in the bathroom of their home on Jan. 30 of last year. She began crying on the stand as she described that day. Her neighbor James Carnley then took the stand and testified he walked over to the Mohn house, saw the body, and immediately calling 911. Tapes of that 911 call were then played. Throughout Monday's testimony, Justin Mohn sat nearly emotionless while occasionally smiling at times as he talked with his attorney.
More than 100 people are confirmed dead after devastating weekend flooding in Texas. A Warren County, New Jersey native is being credited with rescuing at least 165 others. Scott Ruskan is a U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer and says the children deserve more credit than him. "Even as a professional rescuer, I was nervous getting in that water. I can't imagine how eight and nine-year-old did it. These kids are heroic," Ruskan says. Ruskan was singled out by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for his work in saving flood victims.
Rescue crews from Pennsylvania are headed to Texas. Governor Josh Shapiro announced yesterday that Pennsylvania Task Force One is being deployed to the Lone Star State after devastating flooding. Officials say over 100 people are dead, including at least 28 children. The governor said the Commonwealth is praying for Texas and every family who is mourning the loss of a loved one.
Pennsylvania State Police and PennDOT are reminding drivers across the commonwealth about the importance of using caution when driving through work zones. The two organizations held a press event on Monday to discuss Operation Yellow Jacket, a joint effort designed to maintain highway safety for all motorists and road crews. As part of the program, troopers monitor traffic inside PennDOT-designated work zones and if a violation is observed, they communicate to another trooper in a marked patrol unit to initiate a traffic stop. State law requires drivers to slow down, turn on their headlights, and obey all posted speed limits and traffic patterns when driving through work zones.
The Flyers are locking-down a promising blue liner. The team announced on Monday that Cam York agreed to a five-year contract worth almost $26 million. The defenseman was a restricted free agent and will make just over $5 million per season. The 24-year-old had 17 points and was a minus-eight in 66 games last season. York was taken by Philly with the 14th-overall pick in the 2019 draft.
