Three people are dead following a crash in Lehigh County. The accident happened just before 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon on Route 309 near Gun Club Road. The coroner says two victims were pronounced dead at the scene and a third died this morning at the hospital. Their identities have not yet been released and the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
A Hellertown woman will be sentenced July 16 after being convicted of an estate sales scam that robbed 15 victims out of more than $35,000. Amy Lynn Richline, who owned Bethlehem-based Top Notch Estate Sales, was found guilty of a total of 13 counts of theft and 13 counts of deceptive business practices. The conviction followed a four-day bench trial before Northampton County Judge Brian Panella. All the victims say they were not allowed to attend the estate sales and didn’t receive an itemized list of the items sold and never received payment.
J. Birney Crum Stadium in Allentown hosted a football camp Sunday, with the featured attraction Philadelphia Eagles star wide receiver A.J. Brown, who said he was happy to be there and hopefully make an impact on the youngsters. "The biggest gift you can give someone is to inspire them. We're out here with these kids and I just want to inspire someone like someone inspired me to play this game," Brown said. Brown says he tried to focus on more than just football with a message of having fun and encouraging one another to succeed.
An Indiana company is recalling tomatoes sold by Gordon Food Service stores in Pennsylvania and at least ten other states due to a risk of salmonella. The FDA issued an alert for the produce distributed under the Ray & Mascari Inc. brand name on Saturday. The recall applies to four count clamshell packages of "Vine Ripe" tomatoes. Specific lot numbers for the impacted products are posted on the FDA website. Anyone who has purchased the tomatoes is advised to throw them out.
A nationwide study indicates another childhood disease is on the upswing as vaccination rates fall across the country. ProPublica reports whooping cough is starting to increase again, much like measles has become more widespread. New Jersey is among 39 states where measles vaccine rates fell below herd immunity rates two years ago. The Garden State is also among states where whooping cough vaccination rates fell over a ten-year period. Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, can be fatal among infants and young children.
Governor Phil Murphy has blasted the recent delays and cancellations of flights at Newark International Airport, calling them unacceptable. In an online post, the governor also pushed for a reversal in staff cuts at the FAA. The airport is now ranked number one in the world in flight delays and cancellations. Meanwhile, United Airlines has announced it's cutting almost three dozen flights from its daily schedule in and out of Newark. More than 100 flights were canceled yesterday while more than 300 were delayed. There has been travel chaos six days in a row at Newark, one of the busiest airports in the nation.
Three relatively local amusement parks have landed on a list of the 20 best parks in the nation. Hersheypark, Knoebels and Six Flags Great Adventure make the list compiled by U.S. News and World Report. Other parks on the list are Disney World, Busch Gardens, Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood.
The Lehigh Valley Phantoms are one win away from advancing in the AHL playoffs. The Phantoms beat Hershey 4-2 in game three of their playoff series Sunday night to go up two games to one. Head coach Ian Laperriere says it was a true team effort. "Was it perfect? No. It's a helluva a team we're playing. It's the second best team in the league. They're going to have their push, which they did. I like how we responded. We went down a goal. We didn't panic. We stayed with it," Laperriere says. Game four is Friday night at PPL Center.
