“Reid ‘em and SWEEP!!”

A home sweep!!!!  Reid??!!  He plays 3rd base, right?!   Yeah baby!!!  THAT’S what I am talking about!!!

For the 2nd day in a row, 3rd baseman Reid Brignac  – had the game winning hit as he came through in a HUGE clutch situation when he SMOKED a tie-breaking, 2-run double off Dale Thayer to give the Phillies a 4-2 lead in the 6th.  And propelled the Phillies to a 7-3 win over the Pads.

If I can think of ONE thing that our Phillies have been lacking this year – and as my Father always drilled into me as a young ballplayer – is CLUTCH HITTING.

You get up with men on base, you have 1 job.  Drive them home.  Period.  And in games that are tied or you are losing, that is the epitome of clutch hitting.  And yes, I am starting to see some signs of life this past series.  Brignac started it in the 6th yesterday – following up his mammoth 3 run walk off HR the night before – and then Mayberry went yard for a 3 run blast in the 7th off reliever Alex Torres.  That extended the lead and showed MORE clutch hitting.

Don’t get me wrong, we aren’t sweeping the SF Giants here.  This is only the SD Padres.  But it’s a home sweep and the games have been won in a commanding fashion.  There have been no signs of meltdowns in the late innings by our revitalized bullpen.  No stranding runners on base in the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th innings while we give the opposing teams a chance to come back.  And no bonehead moves by our rookie manager to lose games for us.

It’s a good week so far and taking a look at the standings, we are only 6.5 back and now tied for 4th.  That is a heck of an improvement over the past few days.

And guess what?  Instead of cringing when the bullpen is called upon, I am ANTICIPATING seeing the bullpen come in and pitch.  I dare say they are becoming a force?  Lets take a look at their home WHIP (walks/hits per innings pitched).  It’s a miniscule 1.086.  If you don’t know much about WHIP – I am here to tell you, that is a BOSS number for these guys.  I am impressed.  We have 2 guys in the pen that can hit 100mph on the gun???  Seriously???  Yeah. . . I want to see the Braves again.

Yep – I am excited.  And finally I think I have reason to be.  Lee is on the mend and we will see him back on the mound soon.  And this weekend we roll the Cubs into Phila for a Father’s Day series.  Let’s get the brooms out and SWEEP these Cubs out of town!!!!!
