Who hasn't driven to Philadelphia and not found yourself in a bumper-to-bumper traffic jam? PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards says $125 million will be spent to alleviate those tie-ups. "We believe this combination of real-time traffic management, more frequent trasnit service and the improvement of signal systems on adjacent roads will collectively make this corridor a smoother one for everybody to travel on," Richards says. The plan calls for new electronic signs that will allow PennDOT to remotely change the speed limit to adjust to real-time traffic conditions and allowing traffic to use the outside shoulders as part-time travel lanes between the Turnpike and the Blue Route and between Route 1 and Belmont Avenue. PennDOT also wants control of traffic signals near the expressway and is also looking at ramp meters to regulate the traffic flow onto the expressway.
